Anonymous Random Acts of NICEness

"I was out with a good friend of mine and it was very cold and icy outside. As we were coming out of the building to the parking lot, I seen an elderly man trying to walk across the parking lot. I walked over to him and asked if he needed a hand. He said "Thank you so much. Your help is greatly appreciated." So I grabbed the gentleman's arm and "escorted" him to his car. It was something so small, but it sure felt great!


"I was out with a group of friends for lunch and none of us ordered much to eat. We shared a couple of appetizers and drank water. Our waitress was busy and she worked hard for our table. As we were getting ready to pay one of us saw the picture of her boyfriend. She talked about how nice he was and that when she got off work he was going to drive in to pick her up because her car broke down. We all decided to leave her an extra big tip to help with her car. We each left her $5.00 and a note that said "You have just been a 'victim' of a random act of kindness. We wanted to contribute to your car fund."


"I've been thinking a lot about performing my first Random Act of NICEness so the other day I bought lunch for the car behind me in line at McDonald's. The lady I gave the money to looked at me kinda strange when I told her what I was doing, but she must have told the guy because he was at the window for a long time!"

Be NICE everyday

One of the goals of NICE is to spread Random Acts of Kindness. Many of you have probably seen the movie Pay it Forward. The concepts are similar. Random Acts of Kindness or (RAKs) can be small things like leaving your change in the vending machine for the next person or large things such as an entire school participating in raising money.

Each of us have the opportunity to bring a smile to someones face everyday. It really is fun to look for these opportunities and even more fun to do them. It reminds me of a kids' secret game. I was hooked after the first random act I performed!

Although we have planned NICE activities we want to encourage each of you to commit your own Random Acts of NICEness. Please report them back to us and we will post your act anonymously.So, start looking for those opportunities and after you find one send an email to niceofqc@gmail.com and we will post your act on the blog. I can't wait to see what you all are up to.

THAT WAS FUN!

We all had a GREAT time delivering the treat bags to the homes on Sunday!

We all met in the WalMart parking lot and left about 1:30. We arrived at the first house and were disappointed to find that no one was home. We left the bags for the residents and the staff and headed out to the next house. Luckily, everyone else was home that day.

A couple of highlights for me. One man fell in love with my blue wig and I got a special kiss on the cheeck from him. LOL

A woman was very excited and kept asking, "FOR ME???"

About half way through we all stopped at a gas station to get some drinks and the people inside just loved our costumes!

After delivering everything we finished off the afternoon with Applebees. We all had a great dinner and a great waitress.

It was a lot of fun, and yesterday I heard from the volunteer coordinator that one of the residents is still carrying the bag and showing everyone the special treat she got.

Although we were exhausted when we were done, we also felt good and proud of ourselves for making someone's day. It was only 4 hours out of our lives but it made a lot of people smile.

Thank you to our volunteers! A couple of them (Erin and Jessica) left before we could get their pictures. But, we appreciate all the help. Everything went very smoothly and it didn't take long to fill the bags at all.

Next Sunday (10-28) should be a lot of fun when we actually go trick or treating. We have 9 houses to deliver to so we're hoping to have 3 teams, each taking one car and making the deliveries.

Hello Quad City Interpreters!

Welcome to The Network of Intepreters for Community Enhancement (NICE)

NICE was formed on September 19, 2007 with the purpose of bringing together local interpreters to improve the interpreting, deaf, and general community by volunteering.

As interpreters we have noticed that when we work together to improve ourselves and the intepreting profession everyone grows. The Deaf consumer receives better access and more qualified interpreters. The hearing people involved in the situation get a better view of deafness and a more positive view of the Deaf client. They think of interpreters as professionals.

With this idea in mind we would like to enhance the community in which we live and help ourselves grow as a profession at the same time.

There is no membership criteria. Just come to our events when and if you can. If you have any ideas of activites for us to plan please let us know. Check back often for updates and news.
